There is continued growth of published clinical research providing evidence on the benefits of Yoga for a range of health conditions; including back pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia and its ability to reduce symptoms for respiratory conditions such as asthma and reduce some of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga. Essentially, Yoga Therapy is the therapeutic application of yogic techniques, to help people manage and/or alleviate a range of physical, emotional and mental health concerns. Yoga Therapy techniques empower and support individuals to manage and improve their health condition. They encourage overall well-being.
Yoga Therapy is a mind-body intervention. A Yoga Therapist possesses diverse knowledge and skills, a level of expertise and acknowledgement that is accomplished over several years of both Yoga practice, study and teaching.
I believe Yoga is a practice for everyone, including students with a variety of health conditions and life challenges. As a Yoga Therapist I am uniquely positioned to see connections that others may miss. In practice, this often involves strengthening or stretching structures seemingly unrelated to one-another. The result is a whole-body approach to healing that often has amazing results.
But if Better Breathing is what you aspire towards, I also offer private Yoga Therapy sessions for Breath-work and Pranayama alone.
Let's talk a bit more about that!

Pranayama and Breath-work basics are imperative for a healthy body and mind synergy.
The Yogic Science of Prana (Life Force) understands the direct relationship between Breathing and Energy. The word 'Pranayama' is composed by joining two Sanskrit words: ‘Prana’, which means 'Life Force', and 'Ayama', which means to 'expand Prana by implying a set of breathing techniques.' The word 'Pranayama' as a whole can then be roughly translated as 'Extension of the Life Force.' This great power, with our practice, can be intentionally altered in order to produce incredible results. Pranayama heals the mind.

As is the breath, so is the mind. As is the mind, so is the breath.

The Breath and Energy have an equal relationship. Some would say they have a partnership. Prana rides the breath and the breath moves Prana.
Breath work and Pranayama gives greater access to more potent degrees of vitality and energy. Prana is essential in healing. It is essential for clarity and focus. It is essential for meeting our daily needs and challenges.
Cultivation of Prana gives us the ability to access higher levels of intelligence and awaken the once-dormant potentials of the mind. The breath is an inbuilt and complex system that we all have access to; but for many, we are not utilising it to its highest potential.
Dysfunctional breathing is capable of destabilising health, increasing inflammation in the body and bringing us closer to sleep disorders, anxiety and depression. Functional breathing is effective in efficiently feeding positive energy and bringing to the forefront of your life happiness and wholeness.
Through a variety of lung stretches, we will open up and free some of the strain we gain in shallow breathing. We will purge the excess carbon dioxide stored in the lungs through powerful release techniques, to create space for better breathing. A restored capacity to breathe gives immediate benefit to other physiological functions at the level of organs, systems and cells.
Here are some of the things Clients of mine have reported, after a series of Private Yoga Therapy sessions:
-
Deeper, more restful sleep
-
A reduction and elimination of sleep-disorder breathing
-
Increased resiliency
-
More energy
-
Improved immune function
-
Better concentration and focus
-
They say they are better able to cope with the challenges life can bring

Just imagine learning a few techniques that combat a racing mind, reduce stress and anxiety, improve respiratory health, increase immune function and emotional resiliency and altogether start to feel and look great!
